NOTES OF

August Ragone
SLINGS AND ARROWS…
My original translations came from "'70s Special Effects Graphic:
Superheroes Album" (Uchusen Special, Asahi Sonorama Publishing Company,
1987). This source contained conflicting information compared with "TV
Magazine Special Edition: Giant Heroes Compendium" (Kodansha
Publishing, 1988).
In 1998, Asahi Sonorama updated and appended all
three of its
"Superhero Albums" into a large compilation volume entitled "Uchusen
Special: '70s Special Effects Hero Complete Edition"; this has
corrected all of the mistakes of the first volumes -- including the
glaring mistakes in reference to the SPECTREMAN episode guide and
credits.
Thanks to John Cassidy for pointing out the
discrepancies, and
allowing me to follow up on tracking back and correcting the material
taken from the "'70s Special Effects Graphic: Superheroes Album" -- I
am grateful!
This new Episode Guide lines up with that found in
the earlier
"TV Magazine Special Edition: Giant Heroes Compendium" and must be
considered correct and true. This was cross-referenced with "Fantastic
Collection No.17: The Special Visual Effects World of P-Pro" (Asahi
Sonorama, 1979), "Spectreman vs. Lion Maru" (Tomio Sagisu, 1999) and
"P-Productions Chronicles No. 1: Spectreman" (Tetsuo Narikawa, 2001).
There were still a number of inconsistencies in
each of these
volumes, mainly regarding punctuation (such as the number of
exclamation marks. All was finally corrected by referencing the actual
episode title cards themselves with Amuse Pictures' "P-Productions Must
[Have] Collection: SPECTREMAN" -- a 10-disc limited edition DVD set
issued in May, 2002.
LONE WRITER
Noted author, Koike Kazuo is credited with the
teleplays for Episodes 5 & 6. Koike is best known for creating
the
manga LONE WOLF & CUB (as well as scripted the more famous
feature
films) and CRYING FREEMAN. Koike also contributed to the production and
creation of P-Productions' 1974 action/superhero teleseries DENJIN
ZABOGA, and was a prolific lyricist, penning the theme songs for
MAZINGER Z (1972), GREAT MAZINGER (1974), DENJIN ZABOGA, GREATEST TASK
FORCE: GOGGLE V (1982), SCIENCE TASK FORCE: DYNAMAN (1983) and many
others.
Interestingly, Koike is not listed as the author
of SPECTREMAN
teleplays in any edition of the above-mentioned "Uchusen Specials"
(credit is given to Masaki Tsuji); on the other-hand, he is credited
with the episodes in both the aforementioned "Giant Heroes Compendium"
and "The Special Visual Effects World of P-Pro." He is again credited
in the aforementioned DVD set from Amuse Pictures.
65 OR 63? THAT IS THE QUESTION!
Some sources list 65
episodes for SPECTREMAN, while there were only 63 produced. This is
accounted for as Episodes 9 and 10 were rerun as Episodes "59" and
"60." After Episode "58", on 02/12/1972 and 02/19/72, episodes "09" and
"10", respectively, were rerun as episodes "59" and "60" so the
episodes which followed (59-63) were labeled under some sources as "61"
through "65."
A MONSTER BY ANY OTHER NAME…
Since all of the monsters'
monikers were written in "katakana" (the Japanese alphabet used for
foreign words), therefore the names retain that flavor of romanization.
John Cassidy and I have added notes to the monsters' names to clarify
the "puns" or "meanings" behind the naming of the beasts of SPECTREMAN.
As for now, these are the original Japanese names only.
MORE "PUN" WITH NAMES
To wrap things up, suffice to say
that the creators of SPECTREMAN were having a good time from the
on-set: the names of the two main villains, Dr. Gori and Rah, is a pun
on the English word "Gorilla": "Gorirah"... get it?
